HE READ THE BOOK THROUGH again over the next two days, fixed a few typos and did some light edits, then emailed it to Erma and tried to clear his mind. He’d always needed a break after finishing a story before, a week or two at least. He’d rest and recharge and wait for the next idea he needed to focus on to make itself clear. But five minutes after he hit ‘send,’ instead of looking forward to some days off, he felt compelled to start on something new. There were so many now filling his mind, each world and its inhabitants darker and more sinister, it seemed, than the one before.

In the Jordan Cartwright mysteries, he’d often written characters who were thugs, even murderers, but deep down, they were still people with at least a shred of humanity left inside them. The ones plaguing him now were so cold and soulless, he wondered at times where they’d come from. They seemed almost too real, like they hadn’t been of his own making, and in a way, they weren’t his at all. They’d come to him in glimpses, telling him their stories, each one detailed and fascinating in its own macabre way.
